We went to the mall to see "Santa" one Sunday after church, since the girls were all dressed in their Christmas dresses already. I recognized "Santa" immediately - he is the owner of the house we rented for our first two months here. He really made a GREAT Santa though and I thought there was a good chance Veda wouldn't even recognize him. It has been probably 4 months since we have seen him and we didn't spend much time around him anyway.
So Veda and Eve both hop up on Santa's lap and he talks the talk with them, etc. We take a picture, they get the candy cane. We are walking away and Veda stops and pulls me down to her level. She says "Mom was that Santa, or was that Harold?"
Busted! Not only does she recognize him, but she remembers his name! I couldn't help laughing and just said "Ya, that was Harold! I didn't know he was one of Santa's special helpers, did you?" She seemed to accept that explanation and has since requested several times "Let's go to the mall and see "Santa Harold".
Ahh, life on a small island.
I have always wanted a fake Christmas tree with the lights already on - you know da kine. Travis is of the real tree school - although I am always the one putting on the lights, figures! This year, when I saw these Hawaiian Norfolk Pines, Travis won immediately. We don't have a great collection of ornaments and it's not that fancy, but I LOVE the tree. It is about 9 feet.
This was Veda's genius idea. We had just watched Rudolph and she taped this little red pom pom on herself.
We are busy getting ready for our big trip back to the mainland for the holidays. What do you have for dinner when Dad's at work and you've already cleaned out the fridge? What else, but a can of olives?!
Ya, we really did. I threw on a piece of ham and a cracker, but they didn't want it.

That last pic. of Evie is like looking at my little sister about 27 years ago...so cute. :)
That V is a smart cookie and the story is just as funny the 2nd time around.
OK, I want that tree. It even looks like what I'd imagine a hawaiian xmas tree to be...forget the fakes.
Hilarious story about Veda. Pretty smart, isn't she?!! I love your Christmas tree! One of these days I would love to have a Hawaiian Christmas. I hope your cute family has fun coming back to the mainland for Christmas. Merry Christmas!
love the tree- it's so cool looking. my dream, when ben and i have our own house someday, is to buy a live, liquid amber tree each year, decorate it for X'mas, then plant it outside in our garden after the holidays. After several years, we should have a great collection of beautiful trees that turn red orange and gold in the fall...
P.S. i wish my fingers could still fit into olives!
I love my cute nieces. And it's no surprise to me that Veda wasn't fooled...smart girl!! I also love that his name is Harold and she calls him that.
What a unique Christmas tree. Ryan and I are all about a real tree or no tree at all. I'm glad you got a real one too.
We're going to miss you guys. Wish we were joining you in sunny Phoenix.
Veda is too smart. I can't believe that she even remembered his name! Two years ago Eric's stepfather was the Santa at our Ward Christmas party and my girls didn't even recognize him!
I can't believe you want a fake tree!!! We have used my parents old fake tree every year since we got married (14 long years) and I can't wait for the year we finally get a real tree! I miss the smell.
Tim and I laughed so hard at the Santa story. We saw Santa about 6 times with Syd and he looked so different each time. I kept waiting for her to ask me why, but it never came. The whole Santa thing is going to be hard for me to pull off, I just know it.
I miss you. I cannot wait to hear all about the trip.
