Honolulu Suzuki Institute

Veda and I got back a couple days ago from our trip to Oahu for the summer Suzuki Institute. We spent much needed quality mommy/daughter time together and learned a ton! Suzuki is the method of teaching the violin I use to teach my own kids and my other students. Part of the method is to go to these "institutes" during the summer where the kids have intensive classes, lessons, and concerts. Although intensive, they are SO MUCH FUN. I have some of my fondest memories of time with my own mother when we would go to these institutes together each summer. Bare with me people - I have a butt load of pictures.

Veda's Twinkle group class
Side note: In Suzuki lingo "Twinkler" means a kid that is learning their Twinkle Twinkle Little Star variations. This is a foundation of the Suzuki technique and is a very complicated process. Kids can spend a year just learning the Twinkle Variations. Even after learning the notes, they continue to polish and master the variations for years to come.

Master class group. What a CUTE group of girls!!

Smiling twinklers!

new friends

These are friends that came with us from Kauai. I teach Olivia and her dad Pat is a real hoot.
One morning we visited the Waikiki Aquarium.

This is Veda's Institute teacher Nan Freeman. She was WONDERFUL.

fun violin games

Thumb-sucking buds

waiting to eat Thai food

The final "play-in" concert. 140 kids in all.

All in all a great experience. I was quite empowered by navigating around the big city, and making all the travel arrangements etc. without a hitch. I did feel a bit like a country mouse in the big city. I was a little out of my element having lived in rural Kauai for so long. We will definitely do this again!

Wow, Kaycee! Though it was intensive, I bet it was invigorating to be with such a large number of people with the same focus as you and Veda.

What a great experience for both of you! Veda DOES look so grown up. I love the picture in front of the Thai restaurant. And what is it about aquariums?? They so peaceful and great!! I could go again and again.

So glad your experience at Institute was good. Oh, it takes me back to hear about it. I always loved it when you and I went; and now my little girl is taking her little girl and having a wonderful time. Life is good!!!

good for you. it sounds so funny to hear you say you were intimidated at first by the "big city" when any island of hawaii seems so darn small to me!
heck, you navigated NYC! guess you just adapt to your surroundings...
